In 1901 at Owensville, he married at age 26 Sarah (Sally) Jane Andrews who was born about 1872. The couple had two children.

Their granddaughter Joan Gardner (nee Allan) has written that Edgar was a quiet man who did not drink or smoke. He worked in a whisky distillery as a clerk. He bought a car but never drove as she remembers. He preferred having others chauffeur him.

Edgar was a leading figure in St Kilda sport teams. He was sponsored to attend Wesley College in Melbourne due to his athletic ability, and graduated from there with triple colours for cricket, football and rowing.
