Shepherd Henry Smiley was the third of the seven children of Shepherd Parkman and Margaret Phoebe (Ward) Smiley. He was born at Bacchus Marsh where his father was stationed as a coach driver for Cobb and Co.

When he married Catherine Elizabeth Johnson on 28 February 1888 at Fitzroy, he gave his occupation as butcher. On their marriage certificate, Catherine declared she was 27, a year older than Shepherd, and that she was born at Geelong. Birth records show she was, in fact, older, having been born at Ashby (Geelong) in 1858, the daughter of boot maker William Bree and Catherine (McDonald) Johnson. At the time of her marriage Catherine described herself as a servant living at Carlisle Street, St Kilda and she would have been aged 30, four years older than Shepherd.

Shepherd Henry is shown in a partnership with Clara Isabella Mallett, conducting the Flinders Tallow Company at 472 Flinders Street, Melbourne. The partnership was dissolved in May 1894.

Both died quite young. Catherine died at St Kilda on 20 March 1897 at the age of 39; Shepherd died three years later, on 30 September 1900, at St Kilda, aged 39.
