William Smiley was the sixth child of the eight children of Hugh and Mary (Park) Smiley, and was born at Sidney in central Maine, on 30 November 1757. His naming followed the death of an earlier brother also called William.
On 26 May 1785, William married Rebecca Moore (also spelled as Reback More) at Winslow, Maine. Rebecca was born on 7 June 1767 at Vassalboro, Maine, the daughter of Nathan and Sarah (Town) Moore.
In their married life, William and Rebecca farmed at Sidney in central Maine, close to Winslow and Vassalboro. They had 13 children, with all being born at Sidney.
William died there on 26 April 1850 at the age of 92; Rebecca also died at Sidney, on 3 May 1825 at the age of 57.
